The Basque magazine Argia has built a different way of doing journalism!
Argia is organized as a worker-owned and democratically governed organization, and this structure shapes both their journalism and their workplace. Argia has a long tradition of independent journalism and of standing up to fascism and oppressive forces. Lander Arbelaitz Mitxelena, journalist and co-owner of Argia, will introduce us to their history, organization and how they work to promote and strengthen Basque language and culture.
You can also learn about Argia’s solidarity-based subscription model, an alternative way of financing journalism and building a media that is independent, sustainable and accountable to its community.
About: Argia is an independent Basque magazine with more than 100 years of history. The magazine was forbidden during the fascist dictatorship in Spain. They managed to rise again, avoid censorship and has since developed into the most important weekly Basque magazine, read by more than 60.000 people. Argia is based near San Sebastian and has 26 fulltime workers, making critical journalism possible in many different medias.
